 What Is Carbon Literacy Training?

Carbon Literacy Training generates an awareness of the carbon costs of everyday activities and the motivation to reduce emissions. It’s about encouraging everyone in society to act on sustainability, helping people understand where we are with climate change, how we got here and what we need to do.

The Carbon Literacy Project

The Carbon Literacy Project started in Manchester in 2011 by a team of volunteers, including business representatives, local authorities, and community activists.

In early 2012, supported by Manchester City Council and Westford Mill, the team developed initial material and carried out fifteen pilots. The Project officially launched on 30 October 2012 at the Manchester Arndale Centre, where 50 certificates were awarded.

Since its launch, the Project has evolved into a global movement. In Glasgow, at COP21, the United Nations recognised it as one of a hundred “Transformative Action Programs”.

Other significant milestones include: the launch of sector-specific Toolkits (2019); annual Carbon Literacy Action Days (since 2021); and carrying out training on all seven continents (2023).

At the end of 2025, the Project reached a major landmark – certifying 150,000 learners worldwide. The actions of these learners combined are estimated as saving over half a million tonnes of CO2e.
