1. Understanding Carbon Literacy & Certification

What is Carbon Literacy Project training?

Carbon Literacy® or Carbon Literacy Training as it is often called, is an accredited, 1-day course which teaches and informs people about climate change and the emissions involved in everyday activities. The training is extremely motivating and helps businesses, staff and supply chains identify innovative ways to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions and drive change across the workplace.

Independently verified by The Carbon Literacy Project, learners complete interactive modules and submit actionable carbon reduction pledges to gain official certification.

How do my employees become certified as Carbon Literate?

To achieve official certification, participants must complete 7–8 hours of accredited learning (delivered online or in-person) and submit at least two concrete carbon reduction pledges: one individual action and one collective action. Both are normally workplace based.

Once verified by The Carbon Literacy Project, each learner receives a uniquely coded certificate.

What is the difference between general climate awareness and Carbon Literacy?

Unlike generic awareness training, Carbon Literacy training requires active participation, learning with peers, and measurable outcomes. Every certified employee creates role-specific pledges that directly lower corporate energy usage, optimise supply chains, or cut operational waste, making it a commercial driver for business sustainability.

What impact does the training have?

The Carbon Literacy Project estimates that each individual attending Carbon Literacy training reduces their emissions by an average of 5% to 15%.

Is Carbon Literacy Project Training Worth It?

The cost of training each individual in Carbon Literacy is very low (just £125 on one of our open courses). Group training sessions can be even less, with up to 15 members of staff trained at a time.

This represents especially good value as it includes the initial assessment cost of certification which the Carbon Literacy Project charges. Other certified climate change courses cost several times this amount and provide less requirements for action.

What does the Training Cover?

To gain accreditation, each individual must learn about the following:

• Climate Science: This highly motivational section covers the causes and global impacts of climate change, as well as highlighting the inequity of where we are today.
• Carbon Footprints: As part of each course, individuals come away with their own personal carbon footprint and thoughts on the areas which they can influence most – at home and in the workplace.
• Action Planning: Each participant takes time to create their own specific, personal and group pledges focused on lowering their carbon output. For organisational training these should be workplace-based actions, driving real impact across the business.
• Communication Skills: This section helps attendees talk about climate change and discusses how they can positively drive change both in the workplace and across their community.
