What Does Accredited Carbon Literacy Cover?

Each Lead With Sustainability accredited Carbon Literacy course is tailored to the sector and/or workplace of the client. Through a mix of videos, activities, presentations and breakout rooms, we discuss the urgency and importance of acting on climate change in an engaging and enlightening way.

Lead With Sustainability’s certified Carbon Literacy Training starts by setting the background to the day. The objectives and assessment criteria for achieving certified Carbon Literacy are explained. We then watch a video of Sir David Attenborough and discuss the documentary watched as pre-course homework.

This is followed by an exploration of the difference between weather and climate and the science of climate change. We continue by discussing recent and future weather impacts on the UK and worldwide.

We close the first module by exploring the inequity of climate change: who is affected and how fair this is.

People have known about the issues of burning fossil fuels for more than 100 years. Replacement solutions are available which are cheaper, healthier and far less damaging to the planet.

In the second part of the course, we look at terminology and worldwide policies on climate change. Plus the impacts these are having on our workplaces, now and in the future.

We also explore the co benefits of climate action, including, health, finance, community and more. This helps us see how acting on climate change provides multiple benefits to our organisations – often leading to substantial cost savings too.

We look at ways to cut emissions in food, transport, buildings and our purchases. We discuss circularity and how this can be used to reduce waste and maximise resources.

The third section examines emissions in our sector (business, built environment, transport, civil service). We focus on areas with the biggest potential for change. The course covers market-leading innovations, circularity, Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions, and driving change through value chains.

This section is extremely practical – so trainees think about their role and how they can make a difference. This may include saving costs, improving efficiency, staying compliant or creating market-leading innovations to keep your business ahead.

The final part brings everything together. Exploring ways to improve discussions about climate change, increase actions which will benefit it, and developing significant work-related actions to drive change.

Attendees spend time creating their actions for influencing workplace emissions (or personal lives if they’re between jobs). Carbon Literacy certification asks that we commit to at least two significant actions. These are items we can deliver for ourselves.
