As one of the very first homes in the UK to achieve official Passivhaus certification, Crossway remains a masterclass in low-carbon architectural engineering. Recently, I had the pleasure of visiting this iconic site to see how its pioneering techniques continue to deliver exceptional performance years after completion. 1. Thermal Mass is Key to Overheating Protection

During heatwaves with outside temperatures reaching 36°C, Crossway remains beautifully cool inside without energy-intensive air conditioning.
As the homeowner, Richard, points out: thermal mass is key.
By pairing high thermal mass with high-performance insulation, intelligent shading overhangs, and mechanical ventilation with heat recovery (MVHR), the building maintains a comfortable indoor climate year-round. During the winter, a simple wood pellet burner and the MVHR system keep the house warm and airy, requiring zero active heating for the remainder of the year.
2. Smart Glazing and Passive Cooling
A common challenge in sustainable housing is balancing natural light with solar gain. Too much glass leads to summer overheating and winter heat loss.
